diy rope coasters

A few weeks ago I came across these Martha Stewart rope coasters on Pinterest and was pleasantly surprised at how few steps were involved. Martha projects are generally pretty serious.  I decided to make my own ‘coastal’ version using sisal rope, a hot glue gun and some nautical themed vinyl cutouts. You can follow Martha’s detailed ‘how-to’ instructions here, but they’re really pretty simple to make.

To begin, simply coil the rope, adding a dab of glue every quarter of an inch or so.

As you progress, you’ll need to lay the coaster flat to ensure a smooth, even top. When you’ve reached the desired size (about 4″ in diameter), allow the coasters to dry for at least an hour.

Instead of painting the coasters, I cut some shapes out of self-adhesive vinyl. You can purchase a variety of vinyl colors at most craft stores. If you don’t want to use vinyl, you could also paint on letters/shapes using a stencil.
