If I’m invited to a birthday party, do I have to buy a gift?
If you are invited to a party, you should not show up empty handed. Bring something…even if it’s a bottle of Prosecco or a card
Are gift cards an appropriate gift?
Gift cards are often considered taboo because they can feel impersonal and less thoughtful than a regular gift. However, you can make them more meaningful by choosing something specific to the person you’re giving it to. If the person just bought a new house, for example, think about a gift certificate to Lowe’s or Home Depot, if they like to cook – Sur La Table or Williams Sonoma, if they have kids- an American Express gift card for a babysitter and dinner out.
If someone brings you a gift, should you open it in front of him/her?
The short answer is, it depends. If you are one on one, you should open the gift immediately upon receiving it. Many people will want to see your reaction and appreciation of the gift they took the time to choose for you. If you are hosting a party or are among a large number of people, however, it’s more appropriate to put the gift aside. Opening it is likely make those guests that didn’t bring anything feel uncomfortable.
