My housewarming gift rules:
1. Try not to select a gift that will have to match the rest of the room’s décor to look good. Accent pillows, artwork, quilts, etc. are the kind of things that homeowners will likely want to pick out themselves.
2. If you choose a decorative item (as opposed to flowers or food), always include a gift receipt.
3. A housewarming gift is a token of congratulations and not a requirement. BUT, if you’re invited to a party, you should bring something. Never show up empty handed!
4. Don’t break the bank on your gift; this isn’t a wedding. A bouquet of flowers and/or bottle of wine is perfectly acceptable.
